US holds Iraqi Treasury Hostage

This is one of the most appalling stories that I have read in a long time.

US issues threat to Iraq's $50bn foreign reserves in military deal - Middle East, World - The Independent

The US is holding hostage some $50bn (£25bn) of Iraq's money in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to pressure the Iraqi government into signing an agreement seen by many Iraqis as prolonging the US occupation indefinitely, according to information leaked to The Independent.

So this is one of the ways that the US is getting the government of Iraq to agree to permanent US military bases, the immunity of US soldiers and contractors to Iraqi law, and various other violations of Iraqi sovereignty.
